The organization has a Board of Directors composed of 7 members, which is appointed to provide strategic and functional levels of organization’s operations.
The organization is indigenous women-led as membership, decision making/governance and management of the organization are made by up of women. Up to 86% of the board-decision making body are made up of indigenous women. The chair, the treasurer and secretary are slots reserved for indigenous women. This ensures the driving of the vision, mission, strategy and budgets of the organization rest with the indigenous women and girls. It is policy that the spokesperson of the organization must be an indigenous woman to represent the interests of the indigenous women and girls we serve.
Awer Women Empowerment stands up for the rights of indigenous women in Kenya who have experienced violence, be they victims of human trafficking, sexual exploitation and prostitution, forced marriage or other violence. We offer psychosocial care, organize medical or legal support, help in finding housing and jobs and vocational training.
